Sport as a Tool for Development – Recognising the Transformative Power of Capoeira

QMC School of Capoeira is proud to be featured on the Mayor of London's official website, through the Greater London Authority's Community Insights Hub, in a dedicated case study entitled “QMC School of Capoeira: Sport as a tool for development.”

The feature highlights how QMC uses Capoeira not simply as a martial art or physical activity, but as a powerful educational and community development tool, helping young people build confidence, develop essential life skills and discover new opportunities.

More Than a Martial Art

For over 20 years, QMC has promoted Capoeira in London as a unique combination of martial arts, music, movement, Afro-Brazilian culture and personal development.

Our teaching philosophy, Transformation Through Capoeira, places the development of the individual at the centre of everything we do.

Through structured training, cultural education, mentorship and community projects, we aim to help participants develop discipline, self-awareness, resilience, communication skills, teamwork and a stronger sense of responsibility towards themselves and others.

Developing Young People and Strengthening Communities

The Mayor of London's case study highlights QMC's youth development projects delivered during 2023 and 2024 in Kingston.

These projects used Capoeira alongside creative approaches, including video production, storytelling and role-playing, to engage young people and develop skills extending well beyond physical training.

The initiatives explored challenges affecting young people, including limited access to career guidance, positive role models, professional networks and opportunities for personal development.

Working with young people aged 11–25, alongside families, community leaders and local professionals, QMC demonstrated how sport and creative education can provide an accessible starting point for wider learning and development.

Our approach also encourages greater awareness of diversity, inclusion, cultural identity and the importance of working collectively to create positive change.

Recognition and Support

QMC has also received funding through Mayor of London initiatives in support of our community-focused work.

This support, alongside our inclusion in the Greater London Authority's Community Insights Hub, represents an important milestone in our continuing efforts to demonstrate the wider educational and social value of Capoeira.

We believe that sport and culture can make a meaningful contribution to personal development, stronger communities and improved opportunities for young people.

From Capoeira to Wider Opportunities

Our work also connects with the wider mission of our sister organisation, Quilombo UK, which delivers professional development, employability and skills-building programmes.

Together, these approaches reflect a shared belief: personal development should create opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, training session or workplace.
